Artefill is the first non-resorbable filler that is approved for cosmetic use by the FDA.  It is an injectible filler agent that contains Precision-Filtered Microspheres suspended in a carrier gel containing Purified Bovine Collagen.  The microspheres are made of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), commonly used in artificial implant materials, such as hips and joints.  The microspheres remain intact providing a permanent scaffolding for the skin.  It is best used to help restore facial volume in and around the nasolabial folds and chin. 

Artefill requires a skin test be administered at least 28 days prior to the injection date.  A small amount of the product is placed in the forearm and left to see if there is any type of adverse reaction such as, redness, swelling or burning and itching.  A follow-up appointment is made after 28 days to evaluate the area tested and if there is no reaction, the patient can have the Artefill treatment at their convenience.

Artefill is FDA approved for use in the nasolabial folds. It is currently not approved for other areas of the face. 

The injection of Artefill is a simple, in-office procedure that takes about 15-20 minutes.  Topical numbing cream or injections of anesthetic are used 30 minutes prior to the injection to reduce the mild pain associated with the injections.

Ice packs are recommended for several hours after injections.  Avoid excessive talking or chewing for several hours after the procedure.

Common side effects of the Artefill injection include mild redness, swelling, pain, tenderness and bruising.  These side effects resolve on their own in a few days.  Lumps or nodules can form underneath the skin.  These usually resolve without treatment but occasionally treatment for nodules with injections or drainage is necessary.
